Madcap Mabel Normand

On the opening page is a link to the William M. Drew website, please read the fantastic article on the ‘pre-history’ of movie making in California.  I think of it as a brilliant on-line course, there are film clips, rare photos, animations and just tons of astonishing information, which clarifies a number of misconceptions regarding, “the who, when, where”   (a whole page of Otis M. Gove material).

Mabel was no longer in the movies but that didn’t mean she wasn’t part of the movie world…in 1928, she was at a party at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  There are pictures of the people that were at the dinner party May 15.and some other material in Wonderful Things

Mabel Normand made 5 films for Hal Roach beginning in 1926, after F. Richard Jones was named Head of Production; Roach also signed William Lambert to create costumes. A sketch recently sold at auction of a design by Lambert for Mabel’s film Nickel Hopper for $400 and I think he also designed all her other costumes for her Roach films. There is a post at Looking-for-Mabel regarding Lambert’s fashions at Roach. and also in Film Information, look at link at Nickel Hopper

Mabel was chased by a pair of bear cubs while on a picnic in Mabel's Bare (Bear) Escape (Keystone 1914)

When I posted the article about the promotion of Idora Park location, I received a very thoughtful email from Sarah, a member of Balloonatics telling us about the reactions of some of the park vendors. I add her comment to the post on "Mabel's Wilful Way"

Idora Park was the location used for the 1915 comedy “Mabel’s Wilful Way” there are some photos and data in the Film Information section or here is the direct link. Mabel’s Wilful Way

We all have are favorite images of the beautiful Olive Thomas and recently I was going through my folder of photos.  Remember, when I found the picture of Mabel Normand’s dressing room at the Sam Goldwyn Studio in Culver City and thought I saw a picture of Olive on her wall?  Well, anyway, I had asked if anyone had a copy of it, sadly, although a number of people agreed that it was Ollie and Machelle Vogel told me that it was a rather common photo, no one had a scan to send me nor could link me to a site where I might see it.

I was surfing around last week just googling Olive Thomas images and I found it, on my own. So here are my favorite photos of Mabel’s friend Ollie, in an album in the Looking-for-Mabel Gallery, http://looking-for-mabel.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=5005316  there are a couple duplicates in other albums in the Gallery but better two than none.  I have others pictures, which I may add later but these are the 2 dozen I like best.
